Day 3 | Battle in the Corridors

It had been three days since the invasion started, and things were still looking dire. Lauren was surprised to find herself thinking of it as an 'invasion', but for better or for worse this was their home, and the things rampaging through the hallways and rooms definitely didn't belong there. For the most part she had stayed in Sanctuary, tending to the wounded and trying to make sure everybody at least gave a token effort to eating and sleeping properly, but eventually she had to admit that she couldn't stay inside forever.

Keeping her voice low she gathered Jack and Bert near the door of Sanctuary and outlined her plan - she needed to get to the medbay to restock her supplies, and they were her preferred escorts for the mission. She knew if she brought it up with Sam as a question the other woman would try to keep her from going, so best to approach it with a fully-formed plan already in place.

"We'll be as quick as possible, but if casualties continue at the same rate then there's no two ways around it - I'll be bandaging people up with bedsheets if we don't restock our supplies. So. Will you help out?"

Jack nodded solemnly in acknowledgement. "Forearmed is forewarned," Jack replied and then sheepishly added, "Or something to that effect." Those things never quite came out sounding how he expected. "To the point, I will help. Much better that we move now when we are all still on our feet. Casualties, as you say," Jack agreed.

"You will not tell us what you need and stay to tend your patients?" Jack asked.

Bert listens with uncharacteristic quiet, then unholsters one of his guns.

"How would you feel about taking one of these?" he asks, frowning.

He gives a small shake of his head, touching the other gun on his hip.

"No need. If you need a brush-up before we go, we can do that, or if you'd rather handle something more familiar..."

Jack argued no further and kept his own council while they conversed, checking his arms in the meantime. He was armed with a makeshift sword and a gun that looked like it had seen battle and he was as prepared as he was like to be with the vest Sam had insisted he wear.

It wasn't going to be like any cutting out expedition he'd ever been on, but he was ready as he was going to be.

"A few minutes then," he agreed.

----

Minutes later, Jack waited by the barricade rocking on his feet in anticipation, even smiling. He always felt good before a confrontation and this was no different. It wasn't long before they joined him.

"Ready?" he asked them before turning to Cuthbert. "Hop up the barricade and see that the coast is clear?"

Bert gets a good foothold and pulls himself up to get a look over the wall. The hallway is carpeted in that strange, fuzzy mold, and he can't see too far into the darkness, but what he can see is monster-free. He listens for a minute, then drops back down with a wordless nod to Jack.

The first few minutes are fraught. Once the light of the Sanctuary behind them is swallowed in greeny-hued darkness, it seems as if every noise they hear-- most of which are echoes from other floors-- causes them to stop and take tally of their position. Bert leads, with Lauren in the middle and Jack bringing up the back, and when they reach the turbolift without incident, it feels like a blessing.

Which, naturally, means their little adventure is backloaded with catastrophe.
